Residents of Delhi will be able to beat the traffic by four minutes and reduce their carbon footprint by 4,795 tonnes, with the inauguration of the Mukundpur Chowk flyover on Outer Ring Roadon Friday.
This six-lane flyover which was inaugurated by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Mr Manish Sisodia, has also saved Rs 12 crore of taxpayers’ money.
“This is not just a flyover for commuting, but a big relief from traffic jams. We want to give people a life of ease and dignity by this project,” said Mr Sisodia. He also encouraged the PWD officials to construct a 9-km long cycle track under the flyover, to cut back on pollution, and provide ease of commute. “We will provide the necessary budget to set up solar panels on this track, from the money saved in this project. This will serve a dual purpose – provide shade to the cyclists and use the solar energy for lighting up the streets,” he said.
Those present on the occasion included PWD Minister Shri Satyendar Jain, MLAs – Shri Sanjeev Jha, Shri Ajesh Yadav, Shri Pawan Kumar Sharma and Shri Akhilesh Pati Tripathi – and officials from PWD.
“It took us time to create traffic diversions & move heavy electricity lines to facilitate construction of the flyover. I congratulate everyone associated with the project for their hard work,” PWD Minister Mr Satyendar Jain.
The construction of the flyover began in November 2013 by M/s Continental Engineering Corporation International Corp. India Pvt. Ltd. under a sanctioned cost of Rs 62 crores. The project was finally constructed at a cost of Rs 50 crores.
The 24-km signal-free corridor from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad has three elevated stretches and three flyovers. At a later stage, this stretch will be extended for commuters headed to Noida. The three elevated corridors, all of which are now open, include Vikaspuri-Meera Bagh, Mangolpuri-Madhuban Chowk and Madhuban Chowk-Mukarba Chowk. A part of this 900-meter long flyover has four lanes after it merges with the loops.
Keeping in mind the environmental aspects, the PWD has provided a green belt on both sides of the flyover along with 2.5-meter-wide pedestrian footpath and 2-meter wide cycle tracks. Special emphasis has also been given to public transport with separate bus ways near bus stops. This flyover will be beneficial for the traffic at NH-1 stretch where inter-state public and commercial vehicles travel.
The special features of Mukundpur Chowk flyover include Concrete Deck slab which is supported on steel girders, two portal frames constructed to support merging loop and deck of flyover. Long lasting spherical bearings which support the steel girders are the other salient feature here.
The area witnesses average traffic of more than 1.75 lakh vehicles per day and the signal-free stretch will account for more than Rs 5 crore every year due to man-hours and fuel saved, and lower carbon dioxide emissions by 4,975 tonnes. The carbon footprint reduced is equal to the absorbing rate of 2.29 lakh trees.
