Latest data from 18 locations prove consistent drop in air pollution caused by vehicular traffic
The latest set of ambient air data collected by mobile teams of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee on 18 locations across Delhi through mobile dust samplers on Wednesday (6th January, using the Light Scattering Technique, shows a consistent trend of declining levels of PM2.5 air pollution levels due to the implementation of odd/even rule for four wheeled vehicles.
With the latest 18 locations, the mobile teams of Delhi Pollution Control Committee have so far collected ambient air data from 90 locations, which is the biggest ever data on air pollution in the national capital so far.
(Please find attached the data of air pollution levels in latest 18 locations)
IMPORTANT FINDINGS :
- In all 18 locations, PM2.5 levels were recorded less than 300 (ug/m3)
- In nine of these 18 locations, PM2.5 levels were recorded at less than 200.
- Compared to PM2.5 levels of previous years at this time of the year and even recent months, PM2.5 levels are showing a consistent decline.
- According to scientists working in the field of air pollution, average reduction in PM2.5 levels is between 100-150 units
- This is due to reduction in the number of vehicles on roads of Delhi
- Primary and major source of PM2.5 air pollution at this time of the year is attributed to vehicular pollution.
- Mobile teams of Delhi Pollution Control Committee will continue to monitor air quality data from various locations of the national capital to have a comprehensive data base of air quality in Delhi.
- PM10 levels in central and other parts of Delhi, which are not bordering any state are higher than PM2.5
- Primary source of PM10 air pollution at this time of the year is dust arising from various sources, including construction material, burning of leaves and other kinds of waste in the open and wind blown dust.
- It is clear that levels of PM10 can be brought down only if NCR towns take proactive steps to reduce sources of air pollution in their respective areas.
