- Delhi Government to involve one lakh students in a unique energy conservation programme
- Student participation will be ensured through competitions
- Children to maintain monthly energy consumption at home via energy cards till March 2017
- Details of electricity bills: units consumed and saved to be recorded
- Special prizes for least energy consumption
Delhi Government on Tuesday launched a first-of-its kind mass awareness programme on energy conservation with a target of one lakh school children competing for maximum energy conservation at home.
This unique project is a tri-partite collaboration the Delhi Government and Mott MacDonald and its tertiary Green Energy Solutions.
Aimed at educating both parents and children for energy conservation by dispensing useful energy saving tips, the project aims to make energy conservation a lasting habit for children. “Under the guidance of Power Minister Mr Satyendar Jain, Delhi is cumulatively striving towards energy saving,” said Mr Ajay Bisht, Special Secretary, Power.
The event was attended Secretary Power Varsha Joshi, Liz King from Mott MacDonald and other dignitaries.
“This project has a dual objective of sustainability and conservation of the planet. Our focus is to save 24 crore units of electricity per year with the help of the schoolchildren and their families. The competition costs Rs 10 per student and would lead to saving 10-30 units of electricity per student,” said Liz King Managing Director, Mott MacDonald.
Students will be given valuable tips to save energy, in accordance to this programme. These include turning of lights and fan when not in use, using full load washing machine, usage of LED Lights, solar water heaters, ACs with temperature control, solar inverters and solar lamps.
The children will maintain a monthly record of units saved through energy cards which will be distributed to schools across the Capital. They have to enter the details for electricity bills of their homes from November 2016 to February 2017. These will include the units consumed and units saved. Parents and teachers will be signing these cards each month and in March 2017, special prizes & certificates will be given for least energy units consumed. Children will also be encouraged to share any innovative efforts or ideas they have implemented to cut back on power bills.
