New Delhi: 29/10/2016

Delhi government on Saturday reviewed the ambient air quality in the national capital on the eve of Diwali and the analysis has found that fires in the fields arising out of agricultural residue burning in the neighbouring states are having a major adverse effect on the air quality.

The NASA image of October 26th, which is being released to the media along with this press release shows fires raging in the fields of Punjab and Haryana due to burning of agricultural residue are causing a blanket of haze across entire North India, including Delhi.

Agricultural fires in the fields of neighbouring states particularly Punjab and Haryana are a major contributor in the deterioration of ambient air quality, which will also suffer due to inversion and calm meteorological conditions currently prevailing.

Given this situation, the Environment Minister Mr Imran Hussain has reiterated the Delhi government’s appeal to the residents of the national capital to stay away from crackers on Diwali, since bursting of these crackers would aggravate the deterioration in air quality.

The teams of Environment department have seized illegally imported crackers at Qutab Road area, Moti Nagar, Rajouri Garden and Patel Nagar. The Drive against sale of imported illegal/Chinese crackers is working as a deterrent and has shown an impact on the sale of imported/Chinese crackers.
