  • Report in the Shiv Sagar Restaurant Incident

An incident was widely reported by the Media on the 12th June 2016 wherein a lady and few children were denied entry in a restaurant named Shiv Sagar at Janpath Road, New Delhi on 11th June 2016 allegedly on the pretext that they were ‘poor and dirty’. A fact finding inquiry into the incident was conducted by Sub Divisional Magistrate, Chankyapuri after the intervention of the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Sh. Manish Sisodia.

The conclusion of the inquiry report is as follows:
“From the aforementioned facts and circumstances, it is evident that the children were denied food by the restaurant despite the fact that they were ready to pay for the same because they were ‘poor and dirty’. This refusal clearly establishes discriminatory behaviour of the restaurant management and staff against the children on the socio-economic basis. Such an act violates the Human Rights and Fundamental Rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India, and is against its spirit and essence.”

Taking a strong note of the incident, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi had ordered an inquiry in the incident by the administration. He termed the incident as ‘typical colonial mindset’ which can’t be tolerated.
