- Cabinet approves 769 posts of Punjabi teachers & 610 posts of Urdu teachers
- Decision ensures there will be atleast one teacher for Sanskrit, Punjabi and Urdu in every Delhi government school
The Delhi Cabinet, in its meeting on Friday chaired by the Chief Minister Mr Arvind Kejriwal, sanctioned creation of 769 posts of Trained Gradudate Teachers for Punjabi language and 610 posts of Trained Graduate Teachers for Urdu language, so that each Government school in Delhi may have at least one teacher for instruction of Urdu, Punjabi and Saskrit languages upto the Secondary Level.
At present, out of a total of 1024 (Includes 898 Sr. Secondary, 106 Secondary and 20 Middle) government schools in Delhi, Sanskrit is taught in about 98% Schools, Punjabi is taught in about 24% Schools and Urdu is taught in about 25% Schools.
In the academic year 2015-16, 28612 students have opted for Punjabi language and 82341 students have opted for Urdu language at the time of admission.
The present position is that up to class 8th three languages are being taught, and in 9th & 10th classes, only two languages are taught.
The Delhi Education Act, 1973 vide Rule-9 provides for the three language Formula as reproduced below:
“In the teaching of languages in class 6 – 10, the Three Language Formula, as adopted by the Central Government, shall be followed.”
The National Curriculum Framework of the Government of India provides for the study of three languages from the upper primary stage (6-8) to the secondary stage (9-10). It also provides that the study of the third language should be introduced at the upper primary stage and once introduced, the three languages should be continued up to the end of Class-10.
Delhi Government wants to provide the facility of atleast one such language teacher in each school so that students are not discouraged from opting Punjabi and Urdu languages.
The Cabinet also decided to form a Society for Excellence in Education to devise systems and approaches for improving and sustaining quality in Education with emphasis on character building and personality.
This society is an effort in the direction of bridging all social category gaps in the availability of quality Education to Children up to eighteen years age group.The society will involve professionals in education sector for transforming the education imparted in government school setup. The Society will initially run five schools - two in Rohini and three in Dwarka where new buildings are available.
