- Total number of violators arrested so far in 11 days of the drive is close to 300 (294 is the exact number)
In the Delhi Government Excise Department’s ongoing special drive to crackdown on the menace of illegal consumption of liquor in the open/public places in the national capital, 52 more violators have been arrested, taking the total number of violators apprehended so far to 294.
(Please find attached the specific details of the locations on which the Excise Department carried out the action on Friday and Saturday).
The action is being taken against the violators under section 40 of the Delhi Excise Act and they are handed over to Delhi Police in different Police Stations for further action as per law.
The Delhi Government had earlier this month announced a threefold action plan for crackdown on illegal consumption of liquor and violation of the Excise Act. A week long awareness drive had been launched in this regard recently after which arrests are being made. The government said earlier anyone caught drinking publicly will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and anyone creating nuisance in public will be fined Rs 10,000 and face arrest.
Deputy Chief Minister Mr Manish Sisodia has made it clear that the intention of the government is not to put people in jails but to reform them and curb so this menace which is taking a toll on the families and safety of women can be ensured.
