Deputy Chief Minister Mr Manish Sisodia reiterated that the intention of the Delhi government is not lock up people in jails but to reform them and send a clear message that violations of law will not be tolerated.

Mr Sisodia said the consumption of liquor in the open, particularly near liquor vends and in vehicles is not merely a safety hazard but a major problem for the women safety in Delhi.

He said illegal liquor consumption in the open gives rise to mushrooming of illegal shops, adds to garbage and promotes social evils.

The Deputy CM said there will be zero tolerance against such behavior and the government will keep an eye out for miscreants who violate the Excise Act.

The Delhi Government has announced a threefold action plan for crackdown on illegal consumption of liquor and violation of the Excise Act. A week long awareness drive was launched in this regard following which arrests have been made and more arrests are likely. The government said earlier anyone caught drinking publicly will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 and anyone creating nuisance in public will be fined Rs 10,000 and face arrest.
